Fire Safety for Residential Care Homes
Case Study
Case Study of Wireless Fire Alarm & Fire Extinguisher Installation
A BS5839 Fire Alarm System was required, however the customer didn’t want conventional cables & trunking installed; where possible, they wanted equipment which didn’t effect the homely environment they have created. The use of white sounder bases & detectors helped them blend in.
The Hyfire Taurus Addressable Fire System combined with the Advanced Go Fire Panel allows staff or the Emergency Services to pinpoint the exact location of an activation or fault.
Premium Portable Fire Extinguishers were installed to optimise fire safety throughout.
The Government provides detailed information on what residential care homes need to do, to understand the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005.
Care Home owners need to identify & reduce the risks from fire!
Fire Detection System, Fire Extinguishers, Emergency Lighting
You need to know that your premises has the right fire safety equipment in the right place, AND it is going to function in the right way at the right time.
Every floor should have an appropriate number of fire doors & clearly marked escape routes from all points. The escape routes should be kept clear at all times.
Staff should be trained in fire safety procedures, including how to raise an alarm, how to use fire extinguishers & how to evacuate the building.
Fire action notices should be clearly displayed for staff & guests, so everyone knows what to do if there is a fire. Fire escape routes should have adequate signage showing the shortest available way out.
This should be published as a hard copy & made available to all staff & guests.
Depending on the size of your care home & the number of guests, you may need refuge points. You will also need to evaluate each resident & their Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP).
You must ensure all fire safety equipment is kept in working order & maintained at regular intervals by a competent person.
A Fire Risk Assessment is a thorough review of your premises & the people who are likely to use them, including the elderly, very young children & disabled people. It considers the risk of fire breaking out & what measures you need to put in place to prevent it, keeping people safe. All residential care homes, whatever the size, must complete a Fire Risk Assessment.
The risk assessment should identify fire hazards & rate them in terms of risk – high, moderate or low. For example, a care home kitchen would be considered a high-risk area. At-risk persons should also be identified, such as the occupants or disabled members of staff.
For each risk you identify, a plan should be put in place to eliminate (if possible), reduce & protect people from that risk.
If you do not have the expertise or time to do the fire risk assessment yourself, you need to appoint a ‘competent person’ to help.
